Exclusive F&B at agnès b. Coffee Festival! Inaugural agnès b. Coffee Festival Ends with an Acclaimed Art Exhibition: agnès b. Galerie Boutique Brings the agnès b. x Max Chan ‘By Blueprint’ Art Exhibition

From July, French label agnès b. has been hosting its first agnès b. Coffee Festival to bring all-new coffee and art workshops to spread the gospel of sustainable development and its myriad applications. In August, agnès b. even joins hands with local artist Max Chan to host the agnès b. x Max Chan ‘By Blueprint’ Art Exhibition highlighting coffee as an imaginative art medium, Hong Kong sentiments and flowers, with hopes to showcase the many upcycled uses of coffee beans.

The exhibition also reveals the selected works by participants of the “agnès b. x Max Chan Coffee Cyanotype Art Workshop”. Let’s promote art and sustainability together with agnès b.!

Eco-friendly Art Form Paired with Coffee brims with Local Sentiment

Until 4 September 2023, the agnès b. x Max Chan ‘By Blueprint’ Art Exhibition is held at K11 Art Mall’s agnès b. RUE DE MARSEILLE. Featuring the eco-friendly medium of cyanotypes, the event showcases close to 20 of the artist’s acclaimed works across 4 categories of “Flower Market”, “Unboxed/Boxed”, “Airplane Mode” and “Lei Yue Mun”. Catch his works that are yellowed with coffee for a touch of vintage to illustrate a blueprint of historic Hong Kong. Scan the QR code beneath each art piece to read the description personally written by Max.

Art Series Laced with Coffee for Artistic Variability

“Flower Market: Firework”

As an eco-friendly medium, cyanotype is perfect for promoting sustainability. Mirroring the agnès b. Coffee Festival, the “Flower Market: Firework” series is made with coffee filters and coffee. He says, “I love nature; I love flowers. Since agnès b. is known for its floristry, I’ve included this theme into my work to highlight the brand’s offering and as a thank you to agnès b.’s devotion to sustainability and art. It also pays homage to English botanist Anna Atkins, who was the first person to use this art form to record algae samples. I made cyanotypes directly on the coffee filters to capture the unique silhouettes of the flowers.”

“Airplane Mode”

Cyanotype made with coffee grounds offers a layer of artistic variability whether in colour or texture, thanks to the grounds’ grainy texture. In “Airplane Mode”, he concocted the cyanotype mixture with “Yuenyeung” – a popular Hong Kong drink made of coffee and tea. This results in a vintage-like, yellow hue. The shadows and textures on the paper are derived by origami creases of a paper plane and 5 lucky charms – symbolic of sending blessings to loved ones overseas.

The exhibition also features an interactive element. The series of 9 is composed of Max’s work and 8 students’ best pieces at the “agnès b. x Max Chan Coffee Cyanotype Art Workshop”, chosen personally by Max himself. This collaboration lets the public contribute to art and sustainable development in fun and imaginative means.

Hong Kong and its Stories through the Artist’ Eyes

Max is devoted to the art of cyanotype for reasons that go beyond his family history in the printing business. “Cyanotype was founded in 1842 – the same year Hong Kong opened its doors to the world, embarking on a journey to become the international metropolis it is today. I was touched by its intertwined fate with our city’s history.” As such, Max enjoys incorporating local elements into his work as a medium to tell tales of Hong Kong and to express his love for his home.

“Unboxed/Boxed”

The “Unboxed/Boxed” series created during the pandemic highlights pill boxes printed with cyanotypes of The Peak Tram, Victoria Harbour and Kai Tak Airport – all landmarks of his childhood and symbols of Hong Kong’s heydays. “Unboxed/Boxed” documents the city’s history and Max’s wish for it to leave behind the pandemic – symbolised by the pill boxes. The name “Unboxed/Boxed” hints at the city reopening to the rest of the world. Max says, “I am grateful to know that Hong Kong is already reopened when I debut this piece.”

“Lei Yu Mun”

“Lei Yue Mun is an important harbour that welcomes boats – some for the first time – into Hong Kong; so this place has a dear spot in my heart. I frequent Lei Yue Mun for photography. The ‘Lei Yue Mun’ series highlights its lighthouse, symbolic of the first ray of light when boats arrive Hong Kong. Of course, you’re welcomed to interpret this in your own way!”

Max has also juxtaposed “Lei Yue Mun” with two works made with the tides of the fishing channel. The series is also void of frames, symbolic of the endless, boundless possibilities Hong Kong has.

Artist Max thanks agnès b.’s support for local art development

The agnès b. x Max Chan ‘By Blueprint’ Art Exhibition marks the second time the Galerie Boutique has joined hands with a local artist. Max says, “agnès b. has long been devoted to sustainable living and promoting its values through French savoir faire, art, culture and wellbeing. I am so grateful for agnès b.’s support for local art, which truly requires a lot of space and resources to really touch the public eye.
